ZEN Container Gardening

Experts say that connecting with the earth is essential to our health and wellbeing. But it doesn't take a huge yard to reconnect with nature, all you need is a pot and some soil and you are ready to go. With container gardening you can grow flowers, herbs and even do vegetable gardening. So turn your ZEN yard or terrace into an enchanted and edible garden.

Here are some container gardening tips for your organinc home gardening:

Vegetables to grow in containers 8" deep:

  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Small carrot varieties
  • Small lettuces
  • Beans (try growing them on a trellis)
  • Radishes
  • Herbs

Larger vegetables to grow in pots 16" deep and wider:

  • Zucchini (these can become enormous)
  • Cucumbers (put against a sunny wall and have them grow up a trellis)
  • Regular tomatoes

Planting tips and gardening supplies:

  • Use a soil for containers and edibles
  • Choose an organinc fertillizer
  • Good sunlight (min. six hours a day)
  • Water often, pots dry out quickly
  • The more tightly packed the container, the more water needed
  • Vary the size and height of what you plant to make an interesting garden

Planting containers:

  • Pick anything you want - go to flea markets and antique markets
  • Buy different sizes and shapes to keep things interesting
  • Paint them yourself to match your décor and to keep prices down
  • Put them on a movable trolley, cart or wagen so you can move them around for more sun
  • Try using window boxes and hanging baskets

Flowers:

Add some flowers for color and flair. Some varieties, like nasturtiums and violets, have edible flowers. Marigolds help keep away pests that can bother vegetables, and some are edible. Choose flowers that are appropriate for the amount of sun you receive.

Shady options:

If your ZEN yard or terrace is too shady for vegetables, there are a wide variety of flowers that do very well in part to full shade. Check with your local garden center, they are usually well marked as shade loving plants.

Good Container Gardening.
