What’s Hot in Home Décor…Monochromatic Color Schemes

Admittedly, monochrome doesn't sound nearly as lively as last year's 'pops of color,' but in a monochromatic colour scheme texture is key to making this happen. We recently finished the design on our Prima showhome at ZEN in Auburn where we used a monochromatic scheme. It was interesting using all white paint and no painted feature walls after years and years of using colour, beige and most recently ‘griege’ – but the end result is amazing.! What we used to help make the design come alive was texture – a brick wall in the living room is for sure the show stopper. But don’t think of texture as just rough. We also included the high gloss of quartz countertops, the mix of rough stone and shiny glass tile accents in the backsplash, natural linen drapes surrounding bed in the master bedroom, natural wood accents, burlap ottomans, metal industrial style light fixtures – all together this works together. In fact if you haven’t been to ZEN in Auburn Bay yet – it’s is worth the trip just to see this home. So you are thinking that you want to learn to play with texture – you don’t have to install a brick feature wall cause (although we think that you would love the end result)…..try some of these ideas: • Panel drapes are available in many different lengths – what about picking up some panels made from linen or a natural fiber. We have even noticed on Pinterest many tutorials on how to make burlap drapes – now that is texture! • Pick up a metal light fixture at a local home improvement store. Think unconventional when it comes to lights. Why not an industrial style chandelier above your bed or even in your kitchen. • In almost every home décor store we have been in lately reclaimed wood accents are everywhere. Some of them with a gloss finish and some very rough and natural. We recommend using some of both mixed in to your texture redesign. • Or try some gold and/or silver metal accents (FYI – don’t be afraid to mix your metals). The shine of metal will be eye catching and let your house guest know you are an expert at decorating with texture. • An acrylic painting is another great way to add texture along with a little personality. Have fun with texture! And please post pictures on our ZEN Facebook page so we can see how amazing you all are!!
