Home décor trends for 2016 // December 20, 2015
It’s the beginning of a new year, which means it’s time for a fresh start – and what better place to start than your own personal space?
Your personal space should be comfortable & cozy, a place where you feel happy and want to spend time in. It should be a place you can relax in, entertain in, and that you admire. Your interior design conveys a lot about you. It shows that you are on trend, enjoy a place that’s fresh and stylish, and that you’re confident with your own style and flair. Here are six home décor trends to watch out for in 2016.
Bringing nature in
Using fresh flowers to create an eye catching floral arrangement, creating a centrepiece for your dining room table with artfully arranged dried leaves and branches, and using wicker furniture to create a garden-like feel in your living space will be all the rage. Most of us wish we could spend more time outdoors. This trend will make it happen – no matter what the temperature outside.
Decorate with artisan goods
Forget mass-produced items – the latest home décor items are ones created by artisans you love while travelling in foreign countries for example – or by crafters working right in your hometown! If you can’t afford to be a world traveler, you can still visit craft shows and buy beautiful, one-of-a-kind items for your home. Supporting local artists will also give you a good feeling, and gives someone the chance to do what they love for a living. It’s a win-win situation for everyone!
Rocks and stones
Decorating with minerals will be all the rage in 2016. An offshoot of the nature trend, using semi-precious rocks and stones like geodes, pyrite, quartz and granite will add a luxurious, timeless feel to your home. Use them as accents, décor, and even larger pieces as furniture.
Using recycled goods and sustainable materials
This is one of our personal favourites. Whatever the colour of the year is, know that green is always in. From solar panelled roofs to recycled dishware, furniture and storage containers, sustainable and recycled materials are good for the Earth, your soul, and now your style. Upcycled goods, like wall hangings made from mason-jars and recycled wood coffee tables are making their ways into home design magazines and households everywhere.
Metallics are back in a big way
Yes we said it. Mixed metals, such as brass and copper, are making a comeback. When metals are inscribed with intricate designs, they have a retro feel and are absolutely stunning. When you juxtapose them with natural findings, like rocks, wood and faux fur and feathers, it gives a decadent, touchable feeling. Which leads us to our next trend…
Texture
Anything tactile is in, which means interesting and varied fabrics for the couch, faux-fur throw pillow and blankets, and even shaggy rugs. Fabrics that make you want to cuddle up and enjoy a night in front of a roaring fire while a snowstorm brews outside are a great way to usher in 2016.
